A monthly budget that you will actually follow
27 October 2026
A budget fails when it is a wish. A budget works when it starts from what you really spend and only tries to change a few things.
Start from last month
Look at last month by category. That is your real baseline, not what you think you spend. Fixed costs such as rent and insurance will not move, so ignore them.
Budget only the categories that move
Pick two or three categories where you have a choice, usually food out, shopping and entertainment. Set each limit slightly below last month.
Use the early warning
Watching a bar fill is more useful than a total at month end. At 80% you still have time to adjust, and at 100% you know exactly when you crossed it.
Review, then adjust
At month end, check what happened and move the limits. A budget is a conversation with your own spending, not a verdict.
